A lot of people have written to me about my last post on leading a sustainable life. It is indeed the need of the hour. As you may know, Oriflame India is focussing on sustainability and nature for a while now and they recently organized a contest on Facebook called #WeCare where they asked people to write in with the environment-friendly tips that they think everyone should follow. The response was overwhelming and it was heart-warming to see people coming together unified for a cause. Here are some of the best answers –

“We have replaced all the normal bulbs to CFLs. CFLs last 10 times longer than normal bulbs, use two-thirds less energy, and give off 70 percent less heat. We try to buy energy-efficient products. Nowadays, it is mentioned on the appliances, gadgets etc. We wash our clothes in warm or cold water to reduce your use of hot water and the energy required to produce it.
While brushing teeth, shampooing the dog or washing the car, turn off the water until you actually need it for rinsing.”

“Spread the Awareness: Always try your best to educate people about global warming, its causes and after affects. Gather opportunities and establish programs that will help you to share information with friends, relatives and neighbours. Cycling as a part of daily life provides a wide range of health benefits. If I need to go to a local market then I either walk or go by cycle. Both of them are great form of exercise. You’ll be simultaneously saving money, getting fit and helping to reduce global warming. Plus, you’ll set a positive example for others. “

“There are a lot of things we can do to save the earth. Here I’m sharing ways we can reuse paper in several ways, in office especially, where paper wastage is maximum.
- Use email to communicate as much as one can.
- Use the blank side of the one sided printout or always use the option of print on both sides
- Reuse the envelopes you receive from external sources for internal communications as much as possible
- If not able to use the one sided printout for some reason, cut it into small pieces which can be used as post-it or for writing msgs
- One sided printout papers can be given to kids at home for their drawing pratice or for their rough work.
- One sided printout paper can be used for taking meeting notes when stapled like a notepad.”

“The only way to show that #WeCare for our planet is to introduce eco-friendly minimalist lifestyle at an individual level. One tip everyone should follow is Recycle. Just don’t dump everything as waste. If you don’t require something, think about how you can reuse it – new DIY ideas are always on the net that don’t consume our time! If we consciously decrease the waste materials, we can combat the threat. Industries need to implement methods to reuse the waste materials. That way we can make a difference.”

“Using transparent and white coloured curtains for natural light to save on unnecessary power usage during the day, water recycling, rain water harvesting, tree plantation etc. It’s also important to inculcate the culture of green environment in students and youngsters during their school life. So I would make conscious efforts to bring awareness amongst the students about saving water, proper management of using power and water, planting trees as they are future ambassadors of this Earth. Every small determination and step taken by an individual can prove to be an inspiring spark in bringing a change in the reforms and thereby, save our planet and make it a sustainable proposition. So let’s make it a passion and a habit to save our earth for it’s the only living planet we have.”
All of us have the will and the way, let’s make this happen together!
