April is here and we are still just stepping into summer. I’ve been writing to you with a lot of tips and tricks for taking care of your skin during summer as well as fashion tips for getting your spring wardrobe up to date. Today, I’m going to talk to you about a pretty crucial and often ignored aspect of summer, our diets. With the mercury rising, it really is up to us to take care of ourselves and shield our bodies from the ruthless heat. When it comes to food during summer, it is important that we go for light, non-spicy items to keep the body cool. What’s more – summers also mean the best fruits so you can definitely make the most of them. Here are 5 food items you should definitely add to your diet this summer.

 

  1. CUCUMBER

Cucumber can be your best friend during the summer months.  Easily available, you can truly consume as much cucumber as you want without any guilt. Add cucumber in generous portions to your diet – you can add them to your salad, eat cucumber sticks with dip or maybe with just a dash of rock salt or chaat masala. They make for a great, refreshing snack!

 

 

2.  WATERMELON SALAD

For all those days when you just don’t feel like eating the normal fare and the heat is just getting to you, opt for a super simple watermelon and feta salad. It makes for a light, healthy lunch option. All you need to do is chop up some watermelon, add dollops of feta cheese and some chopped mint leaves. You can also drizzle some lime juice on top. It’s truly a bowlful of summer comfort.

 

3. MANGO SMOOTHIE/LASSI

The rightful king of Indian summers, the mango, had to find its way to this list! My personal favourite is the mango lassi, which I make fresh after a long day and it truly re-energizes me like nothing else. All you need to do is get some fresh, juicy mango (whatever kind you like) and blend it with milk or curd. Go on, try it before mango season is gone.

 

4. FRESH NIMBU PAANI

Like our mothers have told us since we were young, nothing is better than a glass of good ol’ nimbu paani. A chilled glass of fresh nimbu paani is not just refreshing; it has numerous health benefits as well. Feel free to customize your nimbu paani with rock salt, chaat masala, soda – pretty much anything you like! I personally like mine with some fresh mint leaves.

 

5. CORN ON THE COB

This is an unlikely item on the list but is a summer favourite for me. All you need to do is rub fresh corn with some butter, salt and lime and roast the corn on an open flame. Not only is corn full of antioxidants, it also is a great snack. However, do remember to go easy on the butter!
